Thiol-SAMMS® (THSL) is a hydrophobic material. It is most easily introduced into an aqueous solution by pre-treating with alcohol. Pre-treatment may not be required in application to organic liquids.
Aqueous pretreatment procedure, as used for standard kinetics test in a fixed test volume.
- Prepare 20% ethanol/water solution.
- Weigh required amount of THSL (0.25g for kinetics test).
- Add THSL (0.25g) into 20% ethanol/water solution (10cc).
- Mix well for about 5 min and add to full solution.
Notes:
The ethanol content may be varied as long as adequate wetting is achieved. We have used 10%.
The ratio of ethanol to adsorbent can be varied as long as the adsorbent is adequately wetted.
Alternatively, Triton X-100 can be used to pretreat Thiol-SAMMS®. The recommended formula is to use as low as 0.1% (wt) Triton to precondition Thiol-SAMMS. An example is given as follows.
- Dissolve 95 g Triton in 25 Gallons of water
- Wet 4750 g of Thiol-SAMMS®
